Zoysia

🌱 Zoysia Grass: Emerald & Zorro

Zoysia grass is prized for its dense, carpet-like growth, rich color, and adaptability across Texas lawns. Known as a premium turf option, Zoysia creates a soft, luxurious feel underfoot while still delivering excellent durability. At Texas Sod Depot, we offer two of the most popular Zoysia varieties for Dallas–Fort Worth homeowners: Emerald and Zorro.

🌿 Why Choose Zoysia?

  • Appearance: Deep green color with fine-to-medium blades for a manicured look.

  • Shade Tolerance: Performs better in shaded areas than Bermuda, making it a strong alternative for tree-covered lawns.

  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, Zoysia requires less frequent watering than St. Augustine.

  • Durability: Its dense growth helps block out weeds and withstand moderate foot traffic.

  • Low Maintenance: Slower vertical growth means less mowing compared to Bermuda or St. Augustine.

🌿 Zoysia Varieties We Offer

Emerald Zoysia

Known as the “Cadillac of Zoysias,” Emerald is a long-time favorite for its classic look.

  • Color & Texture: Dark green with fine, soft blades.

  • Growth Habit: Dense, slow-growing turf that creates a smooth, carpet-like lawn.

  • Strengths: Exceptional shade tolerance compared to Bermuda; stays lush in partially shaded yards.

  • Best Use: Homeowners who want a high-end, manicured lawn with lower mowing requirements.

Zorro Zoysia

Zorro is a newer, advanced Zoysia variety with excellent performance in Texas climates.

  • Color & Texture: Deep green with very fine blades, giving it a golf-course quality appearance.

  • Growth Habit: Builds a dense turf with strong shade performance.

  • Strengths: Superior shade tolerance (better than Emerald) and fast establishment compared to older Zoysia varieties.

  • Best Use: Perfect for partially shaded lawns or properties that want a premium, uniform look with durability.

✅ Emerald vs. Zorro: Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Emerald Zoysia if you prefer a classic, time-tested variety with a soft feel and elegant curb appeal.

  • Choose Zorro Zoysia if you want the latest in Zoysia performance — especially stronger shade tolerance and a finer-bladed, more premium appearance.

Both varieties offer the signature benefits of Zoysia — dense growth, weed resistance, and water efficiency — making them excellent upgrades for homeowners who want beauty and practicality combined.

🌱 Zoysia Grass Maintenance Guide

Zoysia grass is one of the most low-maintenance warm-season turfgrasses available, making it a popular choice for Texas homeowners. With its dense growth, rich color, and natural weed resistance, Zoysia requires less mowing and watering than many other grass types. However, proper care will keep it looking lush and healthy year after year.

✅ Why Homeowners Love Zoysia Maintenance

  • Less mowing than other grasses.

  • Efficient water use — thrives with less irrigation.

  • Naturally weed-resistant for a cleaner, greener look.

  • Durable & long-lasting, with proper seasonal care.

At Texas Sod Depot, we not only supply premium Zoysia varieties like Emerald and Zorro, but we also provide expert care tips to ensure your lawn stays beautiful year-round.

🌿 Mowing

  • Height: Maintain Zoysia at 1–2 inches.

  • Frequency: Mow every 7–14 days during the growing season (less frequent than Bermuda or St. Augustine).

  • Tip: Keep mower blades sharp to prevent tearing the fine blades.

🌿 Watering

  • Establishment: Water daily for the first 2–3 weeks until sod is rooted.

  • Long-Term: Once established, Zoysia only needs 1 inch of water per week (from rain or irrigation).

  • Drought Resistance: Zoysia can survive extended dry periods, though it may go dormant and recover once watered again.

🌿 Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer 2–3 times per year during the growing season (spring through summer).

  • Avoid heavy fertilization in late fall to prevent cold damage.

🌿 Weed & Pest Control

  • Zoysia’s dense turf naturally resists weeds.

  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in spring for added protection.

  • Watch for chinch bugs and grubs in hot weather; treat as needed with approved insect control.

🌿 Aeration & Thatch

  • Aerate once every 1–2 years to improve root growth and water absorption.

  • If thatch (a spongy layer at the soil surface) exceeds ½ inch, dethatch in late spring.

At Texas Sod Depot, we not only supply premium Zoysia varieties like Emerald and Zorro, but we also provide expert care tips to ensure your lawn stays beautiful year-round.
