Frequently Asked Questions

Ensure all site preparation is completed before the sod is delivered. The area should be properly tilled, or have 2–3 inches of new topsoil evenly spread. Avoid compacting the soil—aim for a firm yet loose (fluffy) surface to promote proper root establishment. Rake and level the area thoroughly, removing any rocks, roots, or large clumps of soil. Our team can provide detailed instructions for lawn preparation. Refer to our Sod Installation Guide for more details.

Our sod prices vary depending on the type of sod and the quantity ordered. Contact us for a quote specific to your project.

Immediate watering is essential for newly installed sod. As a perishable product, sod must be laid and watered promptly upon delivery to ensure optimal results. Begin irrigation within 30 minutes of installation, applying at least 1 inch of water. For the first two weeks, maintain consistent moisture by watering twice daily for approximately 30 minutes per session, or once daily for 1.5 hours in the early morning. Keeping the sod adequately moist is critical until it becomes firmly rooted, typically within 14 days.

Refer to our watering guide for specific details.

This condition is typically caused by insufficient watering. As the sod is still alive, moisture is being retained primarily at the root level. To encourage recovery, we recommend continuing to water thoroughly in the morning and afternoon. Avoid evening watering, as it can promote fungal growth.

Since every sprinkler system varies in water output, we recommend a simple method to measure effectiveness: place an empty tuna can in the irrigated area and observe how long it takes to fill. The goal is to apply that amount of water twice per day. This approach allows homeowners to determine the appropriate run time for their specific system to ensure consistent and adequate watering.

For the three weeks following installation, limit heavy foot traffic or concentrated use of your new lawn. This allows the roots to establish securely in the soil, helping to maintain a smooth, even turf surface.

Approximately 4-6 weeks after installation, apply a starter fertilizer to support continued root development and healthy establishment. If fertilizing, use only a product labeled as 'starter fertilizer' and apply it lightly and evenly. Over-application can damage the turf by burning the grass tips.

Avoid mowing for the first three weeks or until the sod has firmly rooted into the soil. For the initial mowing, set the mower blades to the highest setting and remove no more than one-third of the grass height. Ensure the mower blades are sharp to promote clean cuts and reduce stress on the turf.

Discolored or patchy areas in your sod can result from several factors. First, consistent watering is essential—especially during the peak summer months when temperatures are highest. Have you continued regular irrigation? Do you have an irrigation system in place? If certain areas are turning yellow, it's likely they are not receiving sufficient moisture. Sod is delivered with a lush, green appearance, but without adequate water reaching the roots, it can quickly become dry and brittle.

For yellowing areas, increase watering specifically in those spots and lightly apply a starter fertilizer to promote root development—avoid over-fertilizing, as this can damage the grass. Maintain a consistent watering schedule of 1.5 hours in the early morning or two sessions of 30 minutes each, in the morning and afternoon.

In some cases, issues may also be due to insect activity or improper installation, which can lead to air pockets beneath the sod. To check if your lawn is establishing properly, gently lift a corner piece—healthy sod should show white roots beginning to grow into the soil.
