St. Augustine

🌱 St. Augustine Grass: Raleigh and Cobalt

At Texas Sod Depot, St. Augustine grass is one of our most requested sod varieties thanks to its thick, carpet-like growth, broad blades, and ability to thrive in Texas lawns. It’s especially popular in the Dallas–Fort Worth area because it can handle full sun while also performing better than many warm-season grasses in partially shaded yards.

Within St. Augustine, there are two key variations to choose from: Raleigh and Cobalt. While both deliver the lush, green curb appeal homeowners love, they each have distinct features that make them better suited for different conditions.

🌿 Raleigh St. Augustine

Raleigh is the classic St. Augustine variety that has been trusted by Texas homeowners for decades.

  • Appearance: Medium green color with broad blades.

  • Strengths: Noted for its cold tolerance, making it a reliable option in areas that occasionally experience lower winter temperatures.

  • Growth Habit: Establishes quickly, creating a dense lawn that helps crowd out weeds.

  • Best Use: Yards in North Texas and transitional climates, or anywhere you want a proven, dependable St. Augustine lawn.

🌿 Cobalt St. Augustine

Cobalt is a next-generation St. Augustine variety, bred to improve on some of the traditional weaknesses of Raleigh.

  • Appearance: Rich, dark green color with a premium look.

  • Strengths: Offers improved drought resistance and better shade performance compared to Raleigh.

  • Growth Habit: Builds a thick, resilient turf that holds color longer into dry periods.

  • Best Use: Ideal for homeowners who want lower maintenance, deeper color, and superior performance in lawns with partial shade or less reliable rainfall.

✅ Choosing Between Raleigh and Cobalt

Both Raleigh and Cobalt St. Augustine are excellent options for Texas lawns.

  • Choose Raleigh if you want a time-tested, affordable option with strong cold tolerance.

  • Choose Cobalt if you want a modern upgrade with deeper green color, improved drought resistance, and stronger performance in shaded areas.

At Texas Sod Depot, we supply both varieties and can help you select the best fit for your yard based on your soil type, sun/shade mix, and long-term maintenance goals.

🌱 St. Augustine Grass Maintenance Guide

St. Augustine grass is one of the most popular lawn choices in Texas, known for its broad blades, lush green color, and ability to tolerate moderate shade. While it is hardy and attractive, st augustine grass does require regular care to stay healthy and vibrant. With proper maintenance, it can provide a thick, beautiful lawn that enhances your home’s curb appeal year-round.

✅ Why Proper Maintenance Matters

With routine care, St. Augustine creates a lush, shade-tolerant, and resilient lawn that thrives in Texas conditions. Proper mowing, watering, fertilizing, and pest management will:

  • Keep your lawn vibrant green.

  • Reduce the risk of weeds and disease.

  • Extend the life of your investment in fresh sod.

At Texas Sod Depot, we provide not only high-quality St. Augustine varieties like Raleigh and Cobalt, but also the expert maintenance advice you need to keep your lawn thriving.

🌿 Mowing

  • Height: Keep St. Augustine at 2.5–4 inches — taller than Bermuda or Zoysia.

  • Frequency: Mow once a week during peak growing season.

  • Tip: Avoid cutting more than ⅓ of the blade height at one time to reduce stress.

🌿 Watering

  • Establishment: Newly laid sod must be watered daily for the first 2–3 weeks until rooted.

  • Long-Term: Requires about 1–1.5 inches of water per week from irrigation or rainfall.

  • Shade Consideration: Lawns with more shade often need less frequent watering than full-sun yards.

🌿 Fertilization

  • St. Augustine is a heavy feeder and thrives with consistent fertilization.

  • Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall).

  • Avoid fertilizing late in the season to reduce risk of winter damage.

🌿 Weed & Pest Control

  • St. Augustine’s thick turf helps crowd out weeds, but it can still benefit from pre-emergent herbicide in early spring.

  • Watch for chinch bugs, which are common in hot, dry Texas summers and can cause yellow or dead patches.

  • Treat affected areas quickly with insect control to prevent spread.

🌿 Aeration & Thatch

  • Aerate once a year (spring or early summer) to improve oxygen flow and reduce soil compaction.

  • Thatch can build up in St. Augustine lawns; if the thatch layer exceeds ½ inch, dethatch in late spring for healthier growth.
