Sod Installation Guide

Please Read If You Are Ordering Sod

Transforming your lawn with fresh sod is one of the quickest ways to achieve a lush, green landscape. Whether you're in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or New York, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of installing sod, ensuring lasting beauty and health for your lawn.

📏 Step 1: Measure Your Lawn Area

Begin by accurately measuring the area where you plan to install sod. Use a measuring wheel or tape measure to calculate the square footage. This ensures you order the correct amount of sod, typically sold in square feet.

🧪 Step 2: Test and Prepare the Soil Conduct a Soil Test

Before laying sod, it's crucial to understand your soil's pH and nutrient levels. Use a soil testing kit or consult with local extension services to determine if amendments are needed.

Remove Existing Vegetation

Clear the area of any existing grass, weeds, or debris. This can be done manually or with a sod cutter for larger areas.

Till and Amend the Soil

Till the soil to a depth of 4–6 inches to loosen compacted areas. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost, to improve soil structure and fertility.

Grade the Soil

Ensure the soil slopes away from buildings to prevent water pooling. Use a rake to level the surface, removing rocks and clumps.

📦 Step 3: Order and Schedule Sod Delivery

Choose a sod variety suited to your region and lawn conditions. Schedule delivery for a day when you can install the sod immediately, as freshness is key to successful rooting.

🧱 Step 4: Lay the Sod Start Along a Straight Edge

Begin laying sod along the longest straight edge, such as a driveway or sidewalk. This provides a reference line for the rest of the installation.

Stagger the Seams

Lay subsequent rows in a brick-like pattern, staggering the seams to avoid continuous lines, which can lead to erosion and uneven growth.

Fit and Trim

Use a sharp knife to trim sod pieces to fit around curves, trees, and other obstacles. Ensure tight seams without overlapping.

🚿 Step 5: Water the Sod

Initial Watering

Water the sod within 30 minutes of installation. The soil beneath should be moist to a depth of 4–6 inches. We recommend timing how long it takes to fill an empty tuna can - that is about 1.5" of water. Water this amount early morning and each afternoon for the first two weeks.

🌱 Step 6: Post-Installation Care Watering Schedule

  • First 2 Weeks: Water daily to keep the sod moist.

  • Weeks 3–4: Reduce watering to every other day.

  • After 4 Weeks: Water twice a week, depending on rainfall.

Mowing

Wait until the grass reaches 3–4 inches in height before mowing. Ensure the sod is firmly rooted to prevent shifting. Mow on the highest setting.

Fertilization

Apply a starter fertilizer after the first mowing to encourage growth. Follow up with seasonal fertilization based on your lawn's needs.
